Does Gran Turismo 7 Force Feedback still suck?

Does Gran Turismo 7 Force Feedback still sucks? Thats a question Ive had after checking the T300RS with it. It surprised me how improved it felt compared to last year. If you ares waiting to retry So, I took all the Playstation compatible wheels out of storage so we could have a look. We have 5 wheels, from the G923 to the DD1 and everything in between. This way we can understand better if the FFB is improving.

Lets start from the cheapest wheel, the G923. The forcefeedback felt OK overall. A bit muted. The steering was fast enough to be usable and the details correct enough to be precise. It did feel dull. Details I was used from sport arent really there. Its usable but a bit meh overal. Id assume the G29 is very similar to this except with the small vibrayions of the trueforce.

The T300 was a big jump in terms of clarity. It felt both a little more dampened, but at the same time it had more force to play around. It was also a faster wheel. Its from this point that I would say the Force Feedback in Gran Turismo starts to become enjoyable.

The detail increases so much and finally I am able to sense a decent force feedback. Its also the first time I am able the see and understand the variability between suspension and car types. A softer suspension from a road car results in a more sluggish forcefeedback. Race cars have a far faster movement and effects system. In The T300 the forcefeedback is way decent.

Then another jump to the DD PRO its where GT starts to become very interesting. The DD PRO provides really interesting feeling on the wheel. Its also the first one you can customise on the fly. It felt really strong and precise. The differences between car types become even more apparent. Road cars really feel like road cars, a slow reaction time that is felt through the wheelfrom end to end. Changing to tuned or race cars the vibrations and surface details come at you with more force creating an immersive feel.

As we go up in torque to the DD1 and Logitech Pro, its where GT takes for me the highest leap in fidelity. The DD1 and DD PRO where configured pretty much the same, though it just seemed like the DD1 had more headroom and more of the feeling came true. The wheel just felt more meaty, more informative, eager to turn, to grab in the corners. I think its around 8 or 9Nm the forcethat the force feedback takes the next step. This is the same deal  with the PRO. In that wheels case it brings trueforce for extra details to the wheel.

It is with the larger wheels that I think the forcefeedback is more interesting, more detailed and true to life. Its not that the other wheels were bad, but for me it feels GT7 is scaling better with torque rather than ecosystem like it happens with the PC titles.

While the forceffedback has definitely improved, it seems to me that the controls for it need to be improved. Having just a “force” slider is not enough in this day and age where all of these wheels mentioned here can have decent customised performance in the PC. Assetto Corsa, Competizione, iracing and so on, have more options that help unlock potential.

So, GT7 definitely needs something to turn down any unnecessary effects, because remember all of these wheels also have software on the PC, except the fanatics and the logitech pro that can have the forcefeedback changed on the fly through menus.
